Shopping in Dali
It is easy to take some gifts home from Dali, as you can buy some vases and lanterns made from marbles, the tie-dyed cloth, tea, dairy fan and some local specialties from the old town.
Carved Plum
Green plums are carved with elaborate patterns, in the shape of chrysanthemum. It tastes sweet, sour, and refreshing after being soaked with brown sugar and honey in a clay pot.
Tie-dye Cloth
Tie-die cloth in Dali is popular, and it is also made into dresses, bags and wall hangings. Designs on the cloth include small circles and lines, with bright colors including red, yellow, blue, and green.
The tie-dye enjoys a history of more than 20o years in Dali. A clothing made of tie-dye cotton looks great, but the procedure is complicate. The knitted textiles are dyed in a dye vat. The stitches are taken out after the spin-drying. The materials for dyeing are particularly chosen and used to be refined from isatis indigotica fort, a plant. The dyestuff was edible before, however, some chemical pigments have been added into the dye vat with the handiwork changing today. The local villagers have few lands, thus, making tie-dye cloth has become one of their main incomes. Most tie-dyed products are sold on the market of Dali.
